Stefan:

Nice post, as usual. You are improving as a writer with each post. Keep up that good work, buddy.

If you want an excellent example of intrinsic motivation, however, well, look no further. Just observe a child at play. A child dances for the sheer joy of the dance. Similarly, a child paints for the sheer joy of painting. A child tries to build a castle in the sand (on a beach) only for the exhilaration. A child is not searching for a pat on the back or a six figure salary--adults do this.

Sometimes, therefore, the intrinsic motivation comes from sheer curiosity; the joy of discovering something new; the joy of making something out of nothing. Albert Einstein did not pursue his brilliant ideas because he wanted to win the Nobel Prize and become the most famous scientist in the world. Never lose a holy curiosity, wrote Einstein. That's why time and again we find our most creative people have an (almost) child-like innocence. They want to play with ideas and tinker with solutions. Thomas Edison "failed" thousands of times before coming up with his patents.
Finally, we need to be fully engaged with the journey rather than worrying about our destination.
