6 reasons to throw your tv outTo be honest, I didn’t throw my tv out. I use it as a laptop table now. Here areĀ 6 reasons to stop watching tv.

  • It is consuming your brain. Think you get smarter from watching interesting shows? And tell me now what you watch more, interesting or useless shows. Think we’ve cleared that up. TV isn’t going to make you any smarter, you will become brain dead if you don’t watch out.
  • You are watching commercials. You are watching commercials most of the time. At one point, I actually found myself watching commercials over and over again and in that commercial break I found myself doing nothing but watching the commercials I’ve already seen hundreds of times. I was really becoming a zombie. That scared me, take good care of yourself, don’t watch commercials.
  • You are losing a day in a week. People watch 16 hours TV a week, that is actually a complete wake day. Imagine to not watch TV all week, but watching one full day TV instead. So you wake up, watch TV, and keep watching. Horrible right?
  • You can watch all the shows online. David Pierce from Digitizd.com wrote a post about how to watch TV online for free. No need for TV.
  • When you watch shows online, you only see what you want to see. I like Friends and How I Met Your Mother. And I don’t like watching commercials or waiting till 8pm when the show is up. So I download entire seasons and watch them. Perfect. No need for waiting, no need for wasting time. Watch what you want to see.
  • It will save you 20$ per month. That means 240$ a year, you can go away a weekend from that money. Save that money, use it for fun.

Those are my 6 reasons to stop watching TV. Throw your TV out, or just stop using the cable, you only need a DVD-player to watch what you like. What are your reasons to stop watching TV (or keep doing it)?

Stefan,

Thanks for the link! This is a great list, and I totally agree – more and more, I realize it’s just not worth the money to have a TV. I think I’ll just make mine a big ol’ monitor…

On topic: I agree with most of your arguments, however if I lived in America there would be no way that I’d live without a TV ! The worlds best tv-shows and talk shows (Letterman <3 / Colbert Report <3) are there, on time! Instead of the annoying delays in between seasons here in the Netherlands.

Their’s so much that I love in the world but I most say that I hate TV- well 98% of it.
Many of the TV popular TV programmes act like mind killers dumbing down the mass’s

Stefan:

Watching too much TV can destroy the reading habit. TV is also called “the idiot’s box” for a reason.

Once in a while, we are all guilty of watching too much TV. However, once in a while, you should let yourself go, relax your guard, and watch Friends or a good movie. That can cheer you up too.

In other words, one should be very selective in watching TV. One should have better things to do.

Instead of watching TV, a person should cultivate hobbies and interests outside of the work you do.
There is too much passive entertainment on TV, which can make you into a couch potato or worse.
Vegetating once in a while, however, is okay so long as you don’t go overboard. Thanks for this post.

I don’t care what people say about tv.I love watching tv cause it keeps me out of trouble by not going out and doing stupid crap! Reading is fundamental and is good but too much reading is bad for your eyes and worst it’s so medieval,I feel like I am living back in those day before electricity and the internet weren’t invented yet. I love my TV!

Hi Jack,

Well, TV isn’t that bad for you I guess, but all the commercials. I love to watch Friends and How I Met Your Mother, but please, keep the commercials away. I just watch them online!

I’ve never really watched too much TV, but recently I have realized how much of a waste of time watching television truly is.

I have gotten rid of the TV in my bedroom. If it were up to me, I would do away with the one in our common room as well. This way, we could cut the cable bill and save the $20 a month like you said. Unfortunately, my roommates enjoy their TV shows.

In my opinion, TV is becoming irrelevant. Especially with all of the major networks streaming their shows online.
Great article Stefan
